ADWA  A  Victory of Black People.

Ethiopia marks the 112th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa Victory.

Ethiopia marks the 112th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa Victory,in which the Ethiopian army defeated the invading Italian army on March 1, 1896. Ethiopia was the first and only country in Africa that defeated a European colonial power during the 'scramble for Africa', making it the only independent nation in Africa that has never been colonized.

Ethiopia under Emperor Menelik II decimated the invading Italian army in the Battle of Adwa, which made it a symbol of independence and pride for all black people around the World. The colors of Ethiopia's flag [Green, Yellow, Red] have been adopted by many African countries after their independence and school children across Africa are taught about the Battle of Adwa.

The battle of Adwa not only saved Ethiopia from colonization by Rome but also raised the status of an African country to an equal partner in the world community. When the Italians under Mussolini again invaded the country 40 years later, Black people worldwide supported Haile Selassie’ efforts to regain freedom for Ethiopia and celebrated on May 5, 1941 when the Emperor returned in triumph to Addis Ababa.

At the end of the battle 289 Italian officers, 2,918 European soldiers, and about 2,000 Eritreans, fighting for the Italians, were dead. More were wounded, missing or captured. Menelik stopped the torture of prisoners and forced the rest of the captured troops to march to Addis Ababa where they were held until the Italian government paid 10 million lire in reparation. At the news of the victory at Adwa, Black people all over the world rejoiced. Ethiopia became a symbol of the struggle for freedom and Black intellectuals and religious leaders made pilgrimages to the country.

Menelik II Emperor of Ethiopia 1889-1913 Who Defeat Italians On ADWA
"God, in his bounty, has struck down my enemies and enlarged my empire and preserved me to this day.

I have reigned by the grace of God....

Enemies have come who would ruin our country and change our religion.

They have passed beyond the sea which God gave us as our frontier....

These enemies have advanced, burrowing into the country like moles.

With God's help I will get rid of them."

Ras Alula Aba Nega was perhaps one of the most

successful and fearless Ethiopian commanders of the 19th century.

His claim to fame include establishing the city of Asmara and winning no

less than ten decisive battles against foreign invaders

(examples include Gura in 1876 against the Egyptians, Dogali with Italians in 1887, Adwa in 1896).

Despite his humble beginnings as a son of a farmer, he rose to become what one foreign historian

called "the greatest leader that Ethiopia has produced since the death of Emperor Theodros in 1868"
